There is a general opinion that hair loss mostly affects men and this problem is not considered as female disorder. Nevertheless, some experts found that about one in every four women will experience hair loss in various periods of their lives. The problem is that science and society is not considering the problem from this side, and there is very little information about female alopecia. The reasons of this phenomenon can lie in the following:

- Women’s hair loss is not as aggressive as men’s problem and usually the process is much more time-expanded.

- Women are better in masking hair loss.

- Women’s hair loss is more even, while men’s hair loss is usually concentrated in some specific area of head hair coat.

The hair loss has three familiar reasons for both men and women:

1. Hair loss in women is caused by the same reaction to male hormones called androgenetic alopecia. The most affective reason is the conversion of testosterone into the hair-unfriendly DHT. Due to the lower concentration of these hormones, women experience pattern baldness much later. The process is also hampered by the compensative action of female hormones. Nevertheless the nature of the problem is identical to male pattern baldness.

2. Telogen effluvium is the second most common reason of hair loss. This diffusive alopecia can be caused by any traumatic event that results in high stress. This stressing has a bad influence on the normal hair growth cycle. That is why hair loss takes place. The pregnancy is a prime example of high stress that can result in multiple changes, including telogen effluvium. That is why this hair loss disorder is associated more with women than men. However it happens with both genders.

3. Alopecia areata is the third most popular reason of women’s hair loss. Usually it declares itself in patchy areas of hair loss on the body hair coat. Most scientists connect alopecia areata with immune problems and neurological disorders. However the nature of the disease is still unknown. Mostly the hair regrows on the affected areas: this phase is called the involution period. But in some cases the disease turns into aggressive type, which causes the loss of the whole body hair or scalp baldness.
